Ceramics Project

To start my ceramics project I used white clay to create my plate. The size of the plate was about twice the size of my hand. When I was creating the plate I focused on keeping a triangle theme on the plate. The technique I used was called the slump. My piece's purpose is to hold things like a fancy bowl. I got the idea for my project when I saw some examples online. I learned a few things from this project; the steps to making a ceramics plate, how to get air bubbles out of clay and that making these takes time and effort. I would change one thing with my project and that would be fixing the legs on the bottom of the plate, they made the plate I made wobbly.

The Marsh

The Marsh was an acrylic painting that took much longer than other art projects I have finished. There where many steps that had to be completed. The first step was to get a canvas, this was a problem because I didn't bring one in, so I was given someone's old painting. What I did was paint over it in white so I could use it just like a new canvas. Next I started painting the sky. That is where most paintings start because you just paint over top of it and go down. After that I painted the sand and trees in the background. I tried to use good composition by using the trees to take up a majority of the empty space. After I did the trees and grass I worked on the lighting. The sun was placed in the middle so the shadows came toward you. Atmospheric perspective is what an object looks like when its viewed at a distance. I used this technique when making the trees and bushes in the background. I did this by making them lighter and faded. I used light quite a bit in the painting too. I started by making the top left of the sky dark and the bottom right light. I also created a sun which added yellow to parts of the sky and used shadows to show off the sun. I picked an analogous color scheme, I did this because I wanted my painting to flow more and look natural because it was a painting of nature. I used a few brush strokes for my painting such as short strokes for my trees and grass, long strokes for my sky and sand and I dabbed my brush on the canvas to create the bushes. I used value in my painting by making the colors alternate in areas to make the painting more interesting to look at.

Hot Fruit

I started my still life project by grabbing some fruit from home, then I had to plan my composition. I started with this by drawing a few thumbnail sketches. These are small drawing about half the size of your hand that help you decide what way you want to create your still life. I decided I wanted to scatter my fruit about a table but have them overlap for the final product. I picked the point that you view the picture from with a viewfinder. You just look through it at your fruit from different angles to decide on what to chose to draw. I made my objects three dimensional by drawing curves and by making the lighting on the fruit light and dark where it would be light and dark in real life.I made a light source by using a white pastel and made the top left lighter. This led to the right side being darker and the shadows going the opposite way as the light.

Pencil Shoe Drawing

The drawing of my shoes was done with pencil. My goal in this drawing was to create depth. I tried this by making the farthest shoe back lighter and made it look higher on the picture frame. I also used a variety of shadows to add more of a three dimensional effect to the drawing. I started with the shoe on top so I could do the shoe on the bottom under it and not have to erase anything. When I drew the actual shoes I started with the outline of them, detailed them and then added value. The phone is just there to add composition and fill up the big area of blank space.

Alex's Logo

Creating a logo was very different from other projects I have done. The theme here was graphic design. graphic design is creating things like logos and symbols. A logo or symbol might be the little person on the men's or women's bathroom sign or the little suitcase on an airport's luggage claim logo. I started with my logo by coming up with multiple ideas on scrap paper and trying to figure out what looked good and what symbolized me. I used my first and last initials, a soccer ball, a swimmer, a track symbol and an A for Apex. I picked all these things because they represent who I am. I also tried to add a simple design to the bottom to make the logo look more interesting.
